I am going to drop the car with them for a second opinion. He did say that it would be unusual for the covers to leak at 72k miles though, and thought that it could possibly be the filter housing leaking. The gentleman I spoke with said that if it is in-fact the timing covers, that $6-7k is about right. I also called a local Indy shop and spoke with them for a second opinion. Update: got an estimate for roughly $7k from the dealership. Has anyone else had this issue? Do I have any options here? What other services should I have them do while the trans is out? 72k miles on the car, purchased it back in November 2020. I haven’t called back yet to get the quote but I’m sure we are talking several thousand. However, sometimes the belt will slip on the camshaft drive and cause one cylinder to open or close earlier than it should. The timing belt is attached to pulleys that drive the crank and camshaft as we've indicated above. This is usually the case if the internal components fail inside the tensioner. A worn out timing belt might also impact the engine's fire rate. You will know the tensioner is bad if it has no oil pressure because you will get no resistance when pushing. I guess I’m just looking for some advice. Shut down the engine, open the cover, and try to push against the chain tensioner (make sure you wear mechanic gloves). Today I got the bad news which is that the upper and lower timing covers are leaking, and to fix this you have to drop the trans. I scheduled an appointment with the local Audi dealership to have them take a look for me. Checked the obvious things (drain plug, filter, housing o-rings) and nothing looked out of place. I recently performed an oil change on my S4, and a few days later noticed a small oil leak.
